The Lion and the Goat: A Panchatantra Story on Trust and Betrayal
Once, in a dense forest, there lived a mighty lion named Simhakarna. He was feared by all the animals in the forest, and he ruled over the land with authority. One day, while hunting, the lion grew tired and sat beneath a tree to rest.
As he lay there, a goat named Keshav wandered near him, unaware of the lion’s presence. The lion saw the goat and, sensing an opportunity for a meal, decided to make a deal.
“Dear goat,” the lion said, “I have been hunting all day and am very tired. Instead of eating you now, I offer you a chance to live. Become my companion, and together, we will rule this forest.”
The goat, eager to avoid being eaten, agreed to the lion’s proposal. Over the days that followed, they spent time together, with the lion protecting the goat and hunting for food. The goat, thankful for the lion’s protection, believed that they had formed a true friendship.
The Deception Unfolds
One day, the lion came up with a new plan. “My dear friend,” he said to the goat, “there is a great feast ahead. I need you to gather some fruits for me while I wait here. Bring me the best ones.” The goat, trusting the lion completely, left to gather fruits.
As the goat returned with the fruits, he was caught off guard by the lion, who quickly leaped at him and devoured him. The lion, in a cruel twist, had been pretending all along to be his friend.
The lion’s betrayal was complete, and he once again sat on his throne, reminding the forest that true friends are hard to find.
